“Everyone wants the view, but nobody wants the climb.”
That phrase has been echoing in my head lately.
As a coach, advisor, and leader, I pour a lot of energy into helping people grow in their careers and in their lives. But I’ve had to face a tough truth: no matter how much you want it for someone else, you can’t climb the mountain for them.
The View vs. The Climb
The view from the top is beautiful. Success, recognition, and fulfillment all live up there. But the climb is where the real work happens. Long days. Setbacks. Fear. Doubt. Sweat.
Everyone says they want the results. Few are truly ready for the climb.
As leaders, we can:
- Point out the trail.
- Provide the gear.
- Encourage along the way.
But we cannot put in the steps for someone else.
The Reality of Readiness
I’ve learned that some people just aren’t ready. They may say the right things, nod their heads, even start the journey. But when it gets steep, they stop.
And that’s their choice.
Growth requires willingness. If someone isn’t ready, no amount of pushing, pulling, or dragging will get them there.
Protecting Your Energy
Here’s where it gets tricky. As leaders, we care. We want to help everyone. We see potential and think, If I just invest a little more time, maybe they’ll get it.
But not everyone will.
And pouring energy into the unwilling comes at a cost. It drains you and steals time away from the ones who actually are ready for growth.
The best leaders I know don’t try to save everyone. They focus on the people willing to climb. That’s where progress and momentum are created.
Letting Go Is Still Leadership
Letting go doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you’re protecting your energy and setting boundaries. It means you’re creating space for the people who are ready to rise.
Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do for someone is to step back and let them decide whether they’re ready.
The Leader’s Responsibility
Your job isn’t to carry people up the mountain. Your job is to:
- Define the path clearly.
- Provide the tools and encouragement.
- Hold people accountable.
After that, the climb is their responsibility.
Final Thought
You can’t save them all. But you can inspire. You can create opportunities. And you can walk alongside those who are ready.
